Elevators

A type of vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves goods or people between levels, floors, decks of a vessel , building or another structure is called an elevator or lift. Elevators are powered by electric motors to raise the jack a cylindrical piston that either drives counterweight systems like a pump hydraulic fluid or hoist and traction cables.

An elevator is any conveyor device that is used to lift materials into silos or bins in a continuous stream in manufacturing and agriculture. There are different types of elevators such as the grain auger screw conveyor, bucket elevator and chain, which use the principle of the forks, paddles and chain ofhay elevators or Archimedes' screw principle.

There are different words used for elevator in different languages.

Elevator in Korean and Japanese languages is called lift, mainly in Thai, Russian and Cantonese.

Elevators are important and are a legal requirement in new multi store buildings, most importantly where it is impractical to have wheelchair ramps, because of wheelchair access laws.

How did it start?

In 1405, Konrad Kyeser the German engineer designed the elevator.

The first usage of the elevator was being done by architect, Vitruvius of Rome, who stated that in 236 BC,Archimedes already built his first elevator. Elevators were noted as cabs on a hemp rope in some literary sources of some later historical periods. It was also said that they were powered by animals or by hand. It is assumed that these types of elevators were installed in Egypt, Sinai monastery.

Medieval and ancient period elevators were used to drive systems based on winders or hoists. The most important step in technology of elevator, since ancient times, is the invention of a system that is based on the screw drive. This led to the creation of elevators for modern passengers.Ivan Kulibin built the first screw-drive elevator and in 1793, it was installed in Winter Palace. In Arkhangelskoye ,near Moscow, another Kulibin's elevator was installed after several years.

Where was it used?

The need for movement of raw materials including lumber and coal from hillsides made the development of elevators happen. The technology developed when industries worked together. By the mid-19th century, the use of elevators was started in the coal mines which were operated with steam power and were used for moving bulk goods in factories and mines.

These steam-driven devices were applied for a different set of purposes. In 1823, two architects working in Hormer, Burton and London built "ascending room" and operated the attraction of novel tourist. It elevated the paid customers to watch the height from the centre of London, allowing them to enjoy a panoramic view of the centre of the city.
