Overhead Hot Crane

TOWER CRANE

A crane is a lifting machine equipped with wire rope/chains, sheave that can be used for both lifting and lowering materials and move them horizontally.

Advantages of Cranes :

  • It uses one or more simple machines to generate mechanical advantage and moves load beyond the normal capability of the human being.
  • Cranes are widely used in the transport industry where freights are loaded and unloaded, the construction company for movement of materials and in the manufacturing industry to assemble heavy equipment.

Types of Cranes:

  • Overhead cranes
  • Mobile cranes
  • Fixed cranes

Overhead cranes:

Overhead cranes are the ones where hook and line mechanism runs along a horizontal beam. They consist of either single beam or a double beam construction.

Mobile cranes:

These cranes are scaled up on a mobile platform either on road, rail or water.

Fixed cranes:

These cranes are fixed to the ground or sometimes attached to the structure as well.

Tower cranes

Tower cranes are a modern form of balance crane with some elementary parts. It gives the best combination of altitude and lifting capacity. Tower cranes belong to fixed crane types which are used in the construction industry for multi-storeyed building of highness.

The elementary components of a tower crane are mast, slewing unit, operating cabin, jib, hooks and weights.

  • Mast is the main component which holds up the tower of the crane. It is a conjunction of steel trussed sections that are connected together during installation.
  • Slewing unit lies on the top of the mast. This is an engine that enables the crane to rotate.
  • Operating cabin perches above the slewing unit. It consists of the operating controls
  • Jib that is otherwise known as an operating arm that extends horizontally from the crane. A “luffing” jib can move up and down whereas fixed jib has a rolling trolley that moves along the roots to move goods horizontally.
  • Hooks are used to connect the material to the crane. It suspends at the end of thick steel cables that run along the jib to motor
  • Weights are large concrete counter weights which are mounted toward the rear of the mast to nullify the weight of the goods lifted.

Tower cranes are assembled along with a mobile crane (mostly telescopic jib crane which reaches higher altitudes). When the tower cranes are lifted to great heights, the repositioning of the crane becomes difficult than the installation.

The operator usually works in coexistence with a signaller, in order to hook and unhook the loads. They are used in radio contact and uses hand signals. The rigger guides the schedule of lifts for the crane and is duly responsible for the safety of the rigging and loads.
