Understanding Stainless Steel Pipes: The Basics of SS 202 and SS 304
We believe that making the right choice starts with understanding the basics. You often hear terms like "SS Pipe", SS pipe code - "Grade 304," or "Grade 202," but what do they actually mean for your project? Let’s break it down in simple Indian English, without the heavy technical jargon.
What Exactly is a Stainless Steel Pipe?
A stainless steel pipe is essentially a hollow round section made from a special type of steel. Unlike regular carbon steel or galvanised pipes that need paint or zinc coating to stop rust, stainless steel protects itself. The secret ingredient is chromium. Stainless steel contains at least 10.5% chromium. When this chromium meets oxygen in the air, it forms a very thin, invisible layer on the surface called chromium oxide. This layer acts as a shield, protecting the metal below from rust and corrosion.
What makes this even more impressive is its self-repairing ability. If the surface gets scratched or damaged, this layer forms again by itself, as long as oxygen is present. This "self-healing" property is what separates stainless steel from other materials and makes it ideal for environments where moisture, chemicals, or harsh weather are common.

Our Stainless Steel Pipe Range
Stainless steel pipes come in various grades, each designed for specific applications based on factors like corrosion resistance, strength, temperature tolerance, and cost. The two most commonly used grades in India are SS 202 and SS 304, each offering unique advantages depending on your
Stainless Steel Pipe 202 (Grade - 202)
Stainless Steel Pipe 202 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy that offers a good balance between performance and affordability. Developed as a lower-cost alternative to SS 304, the 202 grade replaces some of the expensive nickel content with manganese and nitrogen while maintaining reasonable corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
The typical composition of SS 202 includes:
- Chromium: 17-19%
- Nickel: 4-6%
- Manganese: 7.5-10%
- Nitrogen: Up to 0.25%
- Carbon: Maximum 0.15%
This unique composition makes SS 202 particularly attractive for applications where budget constraints are important but you still need the benefits of stainless steel.
Stainless Steel Pipe 304 (Grade-304)
Stainless Steel Pipe 304 is arguably the most widely used stainless steel grade worldwide. It belongs to the austenitic family and contains higher levels of chromium and nickel compared to SS 202, resulting in superior corrosion resistance and overall performance.
The typical composition of SS 304 includes:
- Chromium: 18-20%
- Nickel: 8-10.5%
- Carbon: Maximum 0.08%
- Manganese: Maximum 2%
- Silicon: Maximum 1%
This balanced composition gives SS 304 its exceptional properties, making it the go-to choice for applications requiring reliable performance in challenging environments.

Surface Finish Options for SS Pipes
The finish changes how the pipe looks, how easy it is to clean and, in some jobs, how it performs.
- 2B mill finish: The standard smooth, grey-silver finish straight from the mill. Good for industrial, structural and concealed use.
- No. 4 brushed finish: A fine linear grain from progressive polishing. This is the most popular finish for railings, kitchen equipment and visible structures because it hides small scratches and is easy to maintain.
- Mirror finish (No. 8): A near-mirror shine created by multiple buffing stages, used in premium interiors, display fixtures and hospitality projects.
- Electropolished finish: An electrochemical process removes a thin surface layer and leaves a very smooth, bright pipe that is easier to keep clean.
- Sanitary finish (SS 304): An internal bore finish of Ra 0.8 µm or better for food, dairy and pharma lines, with sanitary end connections such as Tri-Clamp, DIN or SMS on request.
One point to remember: electropolishing improves the surface but does not change the grade. If the pipe will touch food or medicine directly, we recommend SS 304 or 316 even when an SS 202 pipe is electropolished.

Understanding SS Pipe Grades and Material Codes
When you read a quotation or a mill test certificate, you will see several codes. Here is what they mean.
- Grade series: Stainless steels are grouped in series. The 200 series (like 202) uses manganese and nitrogen to replace part of the nickel. The 300 series (like 304, 304L and 316) is richer in nickel and gives stronger corrosion resistance.
- Grade codes: The same grade carries different names in different standards. SS 202 is AISI 202, UNS S20200 and EN 1.4373. SS 304 is AISI 304 and UNS S30400. All of them point to the same material, so if a drawing uses one name and our quotation uses another, it is not a mismatch.
- Product standards: Pipes are made and tested to standards such as ASTM A312, ASTM A554, ASTM A269 and IS 6913. The standard tells you the tolerance, testing and marking rules.
- HS code: For billing and import-export papers, stainless steel pipes and tubes fall under chapter 73 of the customs tariff, usually 7304 for seamless and 7306 for welded. Please confirm the exact 8-digit code with your CA or customs broker.
SS 202 vs SS 304 vs SS 316: Which Grade Should You Pick?
| Parameter | SS 202 | SS 304 | SS 316 |

Understanding Stainless Steel Pipe Pricing in India
Pricing is one of the most important factors when purchasing stainless steel pipes, and it can be confusing due to various influencing factors. Let us demystify the pricing structure to help you plan your budget effectively.
Factors Affecting SS Pipe Prices
- Grade of Stainless Steel: As discussed, SS 304 costs more than SS 202 due to higher nickel content. Other specialized grades like SS 316 (which contains molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance) cost even more.
- Pipe Dimensions: Larger diameter pipes and thicker walls require more raw material, increasing the price. Prices are typically quoted per kilogram or per meter, so understanding the weight and length you need is important.
- Manufacturing Process: Seamless pipes generally cost more than welded pipes due to the complex manufacturing process involved. However, they offer better performance for high-pressure applications.
- Market Conditions: Stainless steel prices fluctuate based on global demand, raw material costs (especially nickel and chromium), currency exchange rates, and trade policies. Keeping an eye on market trends can help you time your purchases strategically.
- Quantity Ordered: Bulk orders usually attract discounts, so if you have a large project, negotiating volume-based pricing can result in significant savings.
- Surface Finish: Pipes with special finishes like mirror polish, brushed, or matte may cost more than standard finishes.
- Certification Requirements: Pipes requiring specific certifications (such as ASTM, IS, or DIN standards) may involve additional testing and documentation costs.
How to Work Out the Weight of an SS Pipe
Stainless steel is sold by weight in many cases, so it helps to know how much your pipe weighs before you compare quotes. For SS 304, a good working formula is:
Weight per metre (kg) = (OD − wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.02491
Here, OD and wall thickness are in millimetres. For example, a 50.8 mm OD pipe with 2 mm wall has a weight of (50.8 − 2) × 2 × 0.02491, which is about 2.43 kg per metre. A full 6-metre length weighs about 14.6 kg. SS 202 comes out very close to this figure, and the exact weight for your batch is always given on our quotation.
This also helps you convert rates. If a rate is given per kg, multiply it by the weight per metre to get the price per metre. To get the price per foot, divide the per-metre price by 3.28. A 6-metre pipe is about 19.7 feet, which is why buyers call it a 20-foot pipe.
