What is 202 Stainless Steel?

202 stainless steel is an austenitic grade from the 200 series. It was developed as a lower-cost alternative to 304. Nickel is the costliest alloying element, so the grade replaces part of it with manganese and nitrogen. This keeps the austenitic structure and gives good formability and weldability at a lower material cost.

People also call it steel 202, SS 202 or grade 202 stainless steel pipe. In every case, the number is the grade, and it tells you the composition. Not every stainless steel has the same corrosion resistance, so the grade should always be checked from documents and not from a catalogue description.

SS pipe full form: SS stands for stainless steel, so an SS pipe is simply a stainless steel pipe. Stainless steel is mainly iron with at least 10.5% chromium. The chromium forms a thin protective layer that resists rust.

20 Feet Pipe Length and Weight

Our standard 6-metre length is close to 20 feet. If you are checking a 20 feet steel pipe price, give us the OD, wall thickness and finish, and we will quote for that length. We also cut to your exact size.

To estimate weight per metre, use this approximate formula for SS 202 round pipe, taking density as about 7.8 g/cm³:

Weight (kg/m) = (OD − wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.0245, with both in mm.

For a 25.4 mm OD pipe with 1.2 mm wall: (25.4 − 1.2) × 1.2 × 0.0245 gives about 0.71 kg/m, or roughly 4.3 kg for a 6 m length. For a 50.8 mm OD pipe with 2.0 mm wall, it is about 2.39 kg/m, or around 14.3 kg per 6 m. Actual weight varies with tolerance, so the mill test certificate and packing list are final.

Electropolishing improves the surface but does not change the grade. For direct food, pharma or cleanroom contact, use SS 304 or 316 even when the finish is electropolished.

When should I choose SS 202 over SS 304?

For indoor or dry, sheltered places where budget matters: railings, furniture frames, gates and light structures. For coastal, humid, chemical or food-contact sites, use SS 304 or 316.

How can I tell SS 202 from SS 304?

A magnet cannot separate them, as both are mostly non-magnetic. The mill test certificate is the reliable check: 202 has about 4–6% nickel and 304 has 8–10.5%. For pipes already on site, a PMI test confirms it.

Is SS 202 pipe magnetic?

Not when annealed. After bending or forming it can turn slightly magnetic, which is normal for austenitic grades. A weak pull does not mean the grade is wrong.

Will SS 202 rust?

In dry or moderately humid spaces, it resists rust well. Near the sea, in chlorine-rich air or with regular chemical contact, stains show up sooner than on 304 or 316.
